After closing its doors in 2020 for renovations and expansion, Monteverdi Tuscany will be reopening to guests in January 2022. Situated smack-dab in the middle of Rome and Florence, this Tuscan sanctuary is the perfect place to stop and rest for a few days as you make your way up the country during an Italian exploration. Its rustic, homey feel also makes it ideal for a longer stay, should you so wish. We would particularly recommend their Private Village Houses if you’re planning to stay a while!

What’s New at Monteverdi?

Monteverdi has always been swell, but its recent expansion has brought even more swoon-worthy elements to this fantastic property. There has been a huge focus on the spa, which will reopen as the Monteverdi Spa & Regenerative Clinic. Under the direction of a licensed physician, the clinic will offer an array of treatments and programs to promote a vigorous mind and body, enhancing your overall wellness.

In addition to the spa expansion, a new restaurant will open, complementing the hotel’s fine dining venue, Oreade. A meeting and retreat center will please even the most exclusive of executives and board members. Three spacious new hotel suites will also add to the fabulous accommodation offering without increasing the size of the hotel by too much.

Monteverdi Tuscany

Monteverdi is located in a medieval village in the iconic Val d’Orcia, which is in itself a protected UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is two hours from Rome and an hour and a half from Florence, perfectly located for either a stopover between the two cities or as a base to explore with longer day trips.

Monteverdi fuses past and present seamlessly. It feels very focused on two things: celebrating Tuscany as a region and promoting a “life well lived.” The hotel’s design brings to mind a dialogue between contemporary and the rich history of the rolling hills. The hotel’s twenty rooms and the three Private Village Houses simultaneously embrace sophisticated comforts, tranquility, and seclusion, all while staying true to the feel of Tuscany with design elements such as locally reclaimed wooden beams, 18th-century freestanding copper tubs, and coffer beds inspired by scenes of domestic life at Monte Oliveto.

Dining & Facilities

The hotel’s original fine dining restaurant, Oreade, is run by Executive Chef Giancarla Bodoni. We love seeing a female-run kitchen, and Chef Giancarla has been a pioneer in the organic, slow-food movement for more than twenty-five years. Because of her, Monteverdi’s kitchens are consistently filled with the highest quality and freshest ingredients, and the menus reflect this farm-to-table mentality.

The new culinary offering, Enoteca Zita, is more casual, serving premium wines and teaching you the secrets of Italian cuisine at the hotel’s Culinary Academy (more on that later!).

On top of the dining options, there are plenty of places to enjoy a cocktail or a glass of Tuscan wine. The hotel features the Library Bar, the Lounge Bar, and the Terrace Bar, so you’ll never be short on beautiful, relaxing spots to sip and savor.

Staying true to the hotel’s ethos of celebrating the best of Tuscany, the hotel’s brand-new, expanded spa features original stone and reclaimed materials that create the most soothing of ambiances. With such a focus on wellness, a trip (or two!) to the spa is a must-do while staying at Monteverdi. The state-of-the-art regenerative medicine led by a licensed physician promotes a lifestyle of balance and harmony and will make you feel as though you have visited nirvana right in the middle of Tuscany.

With an indoor heated pool and an outdoor infinity pool overlooking the majestic scenery as well as a yoga studio and gym, you have plenty of opportunities to focus on your wellness and relaxation.

What to Do

We wouldn’t be surprised to find that you’re so inspired by Monteverdi’s culinary offering that you want to try your own hand at Tuscan fare. Thankfully, their Culinary Academy, located in the village’s historic schoolhouse building and surrounded by private gardens, is ready to teach you a thing or two. Here, you can enjoy gastronomic conversation and instruction while creating Tuscan classics during cooking classes. Alternatively, try out the Chef’s Table experience, featuring multi-course menus and world-class wine.

Monteverdi also has a keen focus on art, which is reflected in their programming throughout the year. The hotel regularly hosts world-class musicians and singers, exhibits by internationally recognized artists, lectures from renowned thinkers, and more. The venue for these culturally enriching events never fails to impress either: from a 700-year-old church to the hotel’s open gardens to their gallery, you’ll find yourself surrounded by history and beauty as you take in the art and culture on show.

Outside of the hotel, the team at Poe Travel can create a customized Italian itinerary for you depending on your interests and energy levels. We can arrange the best local private guides and exclusive experiences.

Hiking in the Val d’Orcia with a naturalist guide will give you a more in-depth feel of the region. Private visits and tastings at any of the many vineyards nearby will allow you to taste the best of Tuscany. Take a cheese-making class with a Pecorino master to learn how this special local cheese is made. Visit more of Tuscany’s iconic villages with a local guide to show you all the best hidden gems along the way. Whatever you choose to do, you’ll find yourself enriched by Tuscany’s natural and cultural splendor.
