Norwegian Spring Break Hideaways
There’s nowhere like the Nordics, and this is a fabulous time of year to experience Norway with thinner crowds, cooler temperatures, and a chance at glimpsing the elusive Northern Lights.
The Luxury Travel Designer knows all the hidden gems in the Nordics at any time of year, so they’ve shared two of their favorite Norwegian spots for a spring break getaway with us.
Hideaway #1: Isbreen The Glacier
Jøkelfjord, Northern Norway
In a grove at the shoreline at the northernmost tip of Europe, the curves of five igloos rise from the forest. This is Isbreen The Glacier, where the midnight sun flitters between the mountains in the summer, and, in the winter, the aurora borealis dances across the sky.
Upon arrival, meet owners Tonny and Mira as they welcome you into your spacious, well-heated igloo, featuring an en-suite bathroom and private jacuzzi. An arctic lunch is served in the dining suite facing the fjord. Your stay includes all meals, beverages, and on-site activities.
In the early spring, the Arctic is still a winter landscape, but spring is in the air. After the equinox, the days lengthen, and the tundra is bathed in polar light. However, it is still possible to view the northern lights after dark.
Suggested Activities at Isbreen The Glacier:
Dogsledding
Dogsledding is a 4,000-year-old tradition and lifestyle. Visit a husky farm, where your hosts have raised and trained these dogs for over 30 years. Enjoy a private tour of the family farm as you get to know the dogs. Once the huskies are harnessed and ready, head into the wilderness, traversing this otherworldly landscape of winding fjords and lofty mountains, the wind singing in your ears.
Aurora Floating
Drift across the surface of an arctic fjord on this unforgettable floating excursion. You’ll remain warm and dry thanks to a full-body neoprene floatation suit. You may feel like an interstellar explorer, a feeling strengthened when you gaze at the bottomless Nordic sky. If you’re lucky, the heavens may even be lit by the green-and-purple hues of the aurora borealis.
Hideaway #2: TunheimsFjørå Lodge
Fiskå, Norway, Western Fjords
Once you’ve gotten the blood pumping at Isbreen, spend some laidback time at TunheimsFjørå Lodge. This fjordside retreat lies tucked away along the arm of the Vanylvsfjord. Three stylish lodges are cantilevered to hang weightlessly over the water, providing access to a range of fjord and mountain activities and a sense of elemental calm.
Ranging from 1,500 to 2,000 square feet, each of the lodges contains three en-suite king-sized bedrooms. A private sauna and jacuzzi-terrace are set around the open-plan dining space and fully equipped kitchen. The lounge extends over the water, framed by floor-to-ceiling windows on two sides.
This hideaway is all-inclusive, featuring a private host, chef, and housekeeper along with access to all on-site equipment and facilities: an 18-foot fishing boat and gear, kayaks, paddleboards, wet and dry suits, life jackets, mountain bikes, sand volleyball court, outdoor barbecue, sauna, and jacuzzi. Massage treatments are available on request.
This is a fantastic place to just be. However, if you have grand plans for adventures. . .
Suggested Activities at TunheimsFjørå Lodge:
Hiking Tunheimshornet
Tunheimshornet Mountain lies just behind the lodges. At the top awaits a traditional Norwegian “gapahuk” shelter, built by the lodge’s founders, which is a popular hiking destination for locals. Take in panoramic views and enjoy a wilderness lunch by your private chef.
Porsche or Vintage Morgan 4x4 Ride
Drive down the idyllic roads of the Norwegian countryside in your choice of a brand-new Porsche or vintage Morgan 4x4. Take the wheel, the wind rushing through your hair as the hedgerows blur around you, taking in a sense of freedom lost in contemporary motoring. A gourmet picnic waits in the backseat, and your hosts have suggested a route, so hit the road.
DUE NORTH Air Private Charter
From both hideaways, you can treat yourself to the excursion of a lifetime: a privately chartered helicopter experience in a twin-engine AW-169 with DUE NORTH Air, The Luxury Travel Designer’s sister company.
With a helicopter and pilots at your disposal, enjoy a bird's-eye view of valleys, fjords, glaciers, and mountains—a highlight of your spring break in Norway!
