Join Poe Travel and Janet Carson
for a group tour of beautiful Quebec
September 21 - 26, 2019
Day 1: Saturday, September 21, 2019 • Departure/Montreal
We arrive into Montreal in the early afternoon. After collecting our luggage and meeting our guide, we take a tour of two of Montreal’s finest gems, Mount Royal and St Joseph’s Oratory. The sprawling park areas of Mount Royal were designed in 1876 by Frederick Law Olmstead, the highly talented architect of NY’s Central Park. We also pass by one of the oldest cemeteries in Canada, before arriving at St. Joseph’s Oratory. The Gardens of this Catholic basilica were designed in 1942 by the renowned architect Frederick Todd and include the artwork of Louis Parent. We continue along the plateau area to see homes with decorated and ornate staircases, porches and pocket gardens. We take a walk through one of the “green alleys” of the plateau, a series of communal living areas that connect backyards and parks into pedestrian/bicycle venues. We continue to the Old Port of Montreal to check into our hotel. This evening, we see the light & sound show “Aura” at the Basilica of Notre Dame, followed by a group dinner at a fun, local restaurant. D
Day 2: Sunday, September 22, 2019 • Montreal
We start this morning with a walking tour of the Old Port of Montreal. This is where the city began, and has played an important role in the development of North America since the mid-1600’s. We tour the garden of the Chateau Ramezay, the former residence of the early governors of Montreal. We enjoy a visit to the Jardin Botanique. This impressive garden holds over 22,000 varieties of plants from all corners of the world in 10 exhibition green houses, 23 theme gardens and the Back-Tree Pavilion. We pass through the central shopping and entertainment district along St. Catherine’s Street. Dinner is on our own tonight. Perhaps you want to try Quebecquois classics- smoked meat and poutine. B
Day 3: Monday, September 23, 2019 • Trois Rivieres – Quebec City
We check out of the hotel after breakfast to begin an excursion to the rural areas of the province. Our first stop is at Rose Drummond, where we tour their hydroponic greenhouses. Then, we pass through Trois Rivieres, founded in 1634. We travel along part of the Chemin du Roy before arriving at a traditional sugar shack set among the brilliant red leaves of the maple forest. This afternoon, our route takes us along the north shore of the St. Lawrence to the pilgrimage site of St. Anne de Beaupre and the Beaupre Village. We stop in the Copper Art Museum and Atalier Abert Gilles, a local copper artisan. We check into our hotel and have a group dinner in Quebec City. B, L
Day 4: Tuesday, September 24, 2019 • Quebec City
After breakfast, we are on our way to Quebec’s “breadbasket”, Iles d’Orleans. This small island just outside of Quebec City is home to several vineyards, an award-winning Cassis maker, several charming parish churches, art galleries, and more. We are introduced to some of the local artisans, tour the lavender gardens, and let you have some time to shop the local wares. Then, we make the short trip to the Bois de Coulonge. This heritage house is typical of the Quebecois style of the 17th century. Dinner is on our own tonight. B, L
Day 5: Wednesday, September 25, 2019 • Quebec City
After breakfast, a local guide leads us on a tour of the life within the walls of Quebec City. Although the area is designated an UNESCO World Heritage Center, there are still many people who make their homes in these delightful buildings. You see children at play on their way to school and people going about their daily activities, weaving between tour groups and Instagram photo takers. We see the cobbled streets of the Petit Champlain Quarter, Place Royale, the funicular that links upper and lower towns, some of the oldest buildings in North America and small pocket parks. This afternoon, we are on our own. We meet up for a farewell dinner to say “Au Revoir” to this spectacular corner of Canada. B, D
Day 6: Thursday, September 26, 2019 • Return
The battles fought at the Plaines of Abraham decided whether we would all speak English or French. We start this morning with a guided tour of the battlefields and the gardens and park areas that intertwine with the historic legacy. Then, we tour the Parliament Building and the gardens and statues that circle it. We then head to the airport for our afternoon flights. B
